The Zurich Biology Undergraduate Summer School (BUSS) gives undergraduate students in the Life Sciences the chance to perform a significant research project in one of the participating laboratories of the University of Zurich. Participating students not only become familiar with laboratory methods and theoretical principles, but also gain skills in scientific reasoning and scientific communication. BUSS also features an all inclusive three days retreat on the Swiss countryside, visits to Swiss research and science institutions, as well as a kick-off and closing event. a new course on ‚next generation sequencing‚ will be offered from Sept 3. – 6. 2013  (2 credit points)

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have revolutionized almost all fields in biology and are changing the practice of medicine. With the falling equipment and sequencing costs, they are becoming indispensable techniques in research and diagnostic laboratories.

As a joint state-of-the-art research and training facility of the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, the NGS team at the Functional Genomics Center Zurich (FGCZ) offers a four-day course with hands-on practicals. The aim is to help students, researchers, and medical professionals mastering fast developed NGS technologies. The lectures cover NGS technologies, their applications and data analysis principles. The practicals consists of sequencing library preparation from gDNA, sequencing run set up on bench top sequencer, and sequencing data analysis.

Der BIUZ führt zusammen mit der Studienkoordination Biologie eine Informationsveranstaltung über das Fachstudium (3. Bachelorjahr und Masterstudium) durch.

Der Studiengang Biologie ETH veranstaltet am Mittwoch, 21. März 2012 ab 17.00 Uhr zwei Informationsveranstaltungen zu den Themen 3. Studienjahr Biologie BSc (Block- und Konzeptkurse) und zum Masterstudium. Sie sind herzlich zu diesen Veranstaltungen eingeladen. Im Anschluss an die Veranstaltungen wird Ihnen ein Apéro offeriert und Sie haben die Möglichkeit mit den FachberaterInnen des Masterstudiums, mit Master-Studierenden der Fachrichtungen, dem Studiendelegierten Biologie und mit Vertretern des Studiensekretariates zu diskutieren.

Als erste Universität der Schweiz bietet die Universität Zürich seit Herbstsemester 2011 einen eigenständigen Master-Studiengang in diesem Fach an. Informationen dazu gibt es auf der UZH-Website und hier. Interessierte Biologiestudenten erhalten im Frühlingssemester im  Blockkurs STA 220 einen ersten Einblick in das Gebiet.
